Google Display ad sizes and upload limits
The 20 image ad sizes Google Ads accepts, the image specs for responsive display ads, and the file limits that get an upload rejected. Every number comes from Google Ads Help, checked in October 2026.
Uploaded image ads come in 20 fixed sizes, as GIF, JPG or PNG, at 150 KB or less. HTML5 ads are uploaded as a single ZIP file of 600 KB or less, with no more than 40 files. Responsive display ads take a 1200 x 628 landscape and a 1200 x 1200 square image, up to 5120 KB each.

File size and animation limits
An asset over the limit is rejected when you upload it, so check the file before it goes in.
- Uploaded image ads: GIF, JPG or PNG, 150 KB or less per file.
- Animated GIFs: the animation lasts no more than 30 seconds. It may loop, but it has to stop after 30 seconds, and it must run slower than 5 frames per second.
- HTML5 ads: one zip of 600 KB or less in total, no more than 40 files, and only one main HTML file that renders the ad.
- Files inside an HTML5 zip: CSS, JS, HTML, GIF, PNG, JPEG or SVG only. Google Ads HTML5 needs no clickTag: the whole ad has one exit.
- HTML5 is not open to every account. Google requires an account that has been open for more than 90 days, has spent more than USD 9,000 in total and has a good policy history.
| Asset type | Max size | Formats |
|---|---|---|
| Image ad | 150 KB | GIF, JPG, PNG |
| HTML5 zip | 600 KB, 40 files | CSS, JS, HTML, GIF, PNG, JPEG, SVG |
| Responsive ad image | 5120 KB | JPG, PNG |

Responsive display ad images
A responsive display ad is not one fixed size. You give Google images, logos, headlines and descriptions, and it puts them together to fit each placement. The images have their own specs:
| Image | Ratio | Recommended | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landscape | 1.91:1 | 1200 x 628 | 600 x 314 |
| Square | 1:1 | 1200 x 1200 | 300 x 300 |
| Vertical | 9:16 | 900 x 1600 | 600 x 1067 |
| Logo | 1:1 | 1200 x 1200 | 128 x 128 |
You can add up to 15 images, and Google suggests 5 to 10 per ratio. Keep logos off the photo itself: Google asks for a clean logo uploaded separately, not one laid over the image. A 4:5 image at 960 x 1200 belongs to Performance Max and Demand Gen, not to responsive display ads.

How to prepare a set
- Start with responsive. One 1200 x 628 image and one 1200 x 1200 image cover most placements with no fixed sizes at all.
- Add fixed sizes where you need full control. 300 x 250, 728 x 90 and 320 x 50 are a sensible first three.
- Design each size on its own. A 728 x 90 strip and a 300 x 600 column need different layouts, so scaling one file down rarely reads well.
- Check the file size. Anything over 150 KB has to be compressed, or saved as a JPG if it is a PNG.
This guide lists the limits Google publishes. Meeting them does not guarantee approval: Google can still reject an ad for a policy issue or a problem with its landing page.

Questions
What is the largest image ad size Google accepts?
The tallest is 300 x 1050 and the widest is 980 x 120. Among the common sizes, the 970 x 250 billboard takes up the most space on a desktop page.
Can I upload a GIF as a display ad?
Yes. An animated GIF is fine as long as it stays at 150 KB or less, runs slower than 5 frames per second and stops animating after 30 seconds.
What is the difference between HTML5 and image ads?
An image ad is one GIF, JPG or PNG file shown as it is. An HTML5 ad is a zip of HTML, CSS, JS and images that the browser renders, limited to 600 KB and 40 files per ZIP.
Do I need all 20 sizes for one campaign?
No. A responsive display ad with a landscape and a square image fits most placements. Fixed sizes are worth making when you want a layout Google cannot rearrange.
Where do these numbers come from?
From Google Ads Help pages 1722096 (image ads), 6335679 (HTML5) and 9823397 (responsive display ads), read in October 2026. Google changes specs from time to time, so check again before a large campaign.
